Abstract

The main purpose of this thesis is to analyze the variety of North Korean political elite from 1980 to 2017. During this 37 years, North Korea has been governed by 3 top leaders which is the 1st generation leader Kim Il-Sung, the 2nd generation leader Kim Jung-Il, and the 3rd generation leader Kim Jung-Un. As a socialist country, North Korea has strong control over its political elite and people, and it still retains the characteristics of the Stalin's socialism. Accordingly, the paper aims to the changes in political elite according to the development of North Korea, and see how they will affect the change in the political system. Firstly, Chapter 1 basically set the purpose and conducted a review of the existing study and at the same time introduce the methods and scope of this paper. Then Chapter 2 presents the theoretical foundations of the political elite in the socialist system and aims to derive the political elite in North Korea. And from Chapter 3 to Chapter 5 analyze the fluid changes in the political elite and its historical background during the Kim Il-Sung, Kim Jung-Il and Kim Jong-Un regime. Lastly, in Chapter 6, the analysis results will be summarized to conclude the characteristics of the North Korean elite and future development trends for each generation and to estimate future regime changes in North Korea.
