Impact analysis on marine environment characteristics and plant hot waste water discharge system in Uljin coastal area
Abstract
The feature of seasonal change on tidal level, seawater movement and water temperature have been observed in order to identify the ocean environmental characteristics at the shore of Uljin located on the eastern coast of Korea. In this area, the mixed tide predominating by the diurnal tide was detected and there was no feature of tidal current in the flow with distinct scattered by the wind. In terms of seawater temperature, the investigation results demonstrated the typical features. Firstly, the highest surface temperature and the largest temperature deviation of the region were measured near the water discharging area of the power plant. Secondly, the highest temperature and large vertical temperature change were obtained in summer season and the lowest temperature and small vertical temperature change in winter season in general.
The environmental impacts on the presence of heated effluent and the design of intake & discharge system were investigated using EFDC model to verify the effect of heated effluent discharge. It was investigated that seawater movement near the power plant was larger because of the heated effluent discharge and relatively more affected by the surface water intake & discharge.
The range of heated effluent diffusion was decreased by approximately 16 % with Submerged Intake/Discharge systems, which is recognized as the design minimizing the marine influences, compared to the surface water intake & discharge system.
