Modern structures have been focused on economic circumstances or the efficiency of space layout rather than on human value.
Which space is good for the mankind? This essential question might have been meaningless for the architects who have lacked examination of people's thinking process. If you understand how people's emotional reaction to the physical environment and architecture affects their health, you would consider people's health, remedy, and welfare more than anything else when designing a building.
More recent studies in the field of architecture are exploring the understanding of mankind and the interaction between space architecture and people's thinking behaviors through the study of environmental psychology.
Eco-friendly architecture, organic architecture, green architecture, native architecture, sustainable architecture, and naturalist architecture are focusing on people's spaces for healthy lives along with the engineering technology, but the objectivity of space construction may be different according to the method of approach.
In this respect, neuroscientists seek to explore the goal to heal the world through architecture and make the study of architecture a more evidence-based field.
The most highlighted topics in neuroscience these days are healing and happiness. It adopts the Biophilia Hypothesis that people naturally feel comfortable and happy when they are around natural objects such as trees and water and suggests nature-friendly architecture with natural elements as the 'architecture of happiness.'
This study analyzes the characteristics of biophilic design, a method of architecture that understands why people should live with nature based on the Biophilia Hypothesis of neuroscience and intends to include nature in space construction as an environmental element to create a healing environment for the evolving mankind. It also discusses the meaning of natural remedy and its application to contemporary architecture to suggest ways to apply various styles of biophilic design to the architectural environment systems.
