Abstract
In this paper, an efficient data compression method based on MPEG-1 audio layer I algorithm is presented for reducing the memory requirement of the wavetable music synthesis. The proposed scheme improves the data compression rate by changing the MPEG-1 audio layer I algorithm to be a variable rate type coder, exploiting the fact that a block of contiguous subbands with bit allocation informations of zero occurs very often in high frequency region, and applying differential coding to scalefactor index after the attack region of sounds of each musical instrument.
