Abstract
Effect of Heat Treatment and Binder Content on Properties of Diatomite

In this study, to improve mechanical properties of pure diatomite, various binders and heat treatment conditions have been investigated. The specimen was made by a pressing formulation based on diatomite using various ratios of gypsum (CaSO4·2H2O) and acryl-based adhesives. Heat treatment time and temperature of the specimen on the mechanical properties were also investigated. Strength test was carried out by 3-point bending test method and water absorption test was performed. And then, the surface of each specimen was observed by an optical microscope and an electron microscope, and the microstructure was analyzed formally.
As a result, the bending strength increased with gypsum binder, but the water absorption rate was inversely proportional proportion to ratio of gypsum. When acrylic emulsion was combined as a binder, it has higher absorption rate than the one of gypsum. The bending strength and water absorption rate depended on the content of the diatomite.
