다의어 동사 'pick'의 의미범주와 명사연어로 살펴본 영한사전 개선점

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze the meaning categorization of polysemous verb ‘pick’ and the object noun collocation of polysemous verb ‘pick’ by using English-Korean dictionaries. This is to identify the English-Korean dictionary’s right use, so that we can have some solutions to improve English-Korean dictionary and collocation competency. When it comes to having conversations with native English speakers, using proper collocational words is to become fluent. It will help EFL(English as a Foreign Language) learners to choose right words as well as people who have spoken the language all their lives. Through this study we will also know the features of polysemous verb ‘pick’ by studying the meaning categorization of polysemous verb ‘pick’ used in real communication. As we already know, collocation is a very useful and important concept for EFL learners to learn languages especially to speak languages like native English speakers so that this might help EFL learners not to make mistakes when having conversations with English native speakers and help choose the right noun collocations. After studying and comparing all the senses of polysemous verb ‘pick’ through English-English dictionaries and English-Korean dictionaries, I found that five meaning categorization of polysemous verb ‘pick’ which are: pointed tools, carefulness, smallness, repetition and collection. According to each meaning categorization of polysemous verb ‘pick’ from dictionaries, each one could show that how to identify differences between the usage of polysemous verb ‘pick’ and synonymous verb of ‘pick’. EFL learners actually do not have an instinct like foreigners, so learning the meaning categorization of each word is very essential for EFL learners. Most of all, this study will help to improve English-Korean dictionaries as well. For this reason, I believe this study would work as a stepping-stone for EFL learners to improve their language skills when it comes to using improved English-Korean dictionaries.
