心理動詞の使役文の研究
- Alternative Title
- A Study of Causative Sentences with Psychological Verbs
- Abstract
- Causative phrases are formed by using (sa)seru and indicate sentences that make others do certain actions and changes. A general causative sentence is formed by a causee taking actions as per the intentions of the causer. However, causative sentences with psychological verbs are different from general causative sentences since the causee takes certain actions irrespective of the causer’s intentions. This study aims to identify the difference in meanings between causative sentences with psychological verbs and general causative sentences.
In chapter 1, I examine the criteria for psychological verbs, meanings of causative sentences and how they have been studied. First, in terms of the criteria for psychological verbs, Teramura (1982), Kudo (1995) and Yoshinaga (2008) pointed out that “they relate to psychological status of human beings” and “they do not show external signs such as by expressions and behaviors”. Psychological verbs, which are the subjects of this study, are related to the psychological status of human beings without external signs such as expressions and behaviors and I excluded mimetic words and derived expressions. Regarding causative sentences, I investigate the meanings of typical causative sentences and study methods for causative sentences with psychological verbs based on analysis by Aoki (1977), Teramura (1982), Son (2005), and Hayatsu (2016).
In chapter 2, I examine the conditions for causative sentences with psychological verbs. The conditions can be classified based on the existence of causers and cases where the causees are person nouns or nouns pursuant to person nouns. For cases which do not form valid causative sentences with psychological verbs, I focus on the relationship with the causer’s intentions and expressions which are the cause for making invalid sentences.
In chapter 3, I classify the meanings of causative sentences with psychological verbs. I examine the features of causative sentences with psychological verbs which distinguish them from general causative sentences and I organize the meanings of causative sentences with psychological verbs by classifying them based on meanings such as “inducement”, “judgment”, “effects”, “realization”, “self-awareness”, and “consideration”.
In chapter 4, I clarify the uniqueness of causative sentences with psychological verbs which distinguishes them from general causative sentences.
