Alternative Title: Semantic Maps of the English Adjective ‘light’ and its Korean Counterpart ‘gabeopdda’

Abstract: This study aims to analyze the English adjective ‘light’ and its Korean adjective counterpart ‘gabeopdda’ in the framework of Lexical Typology set out François(2008). It explains the semantic network of LIGHT based on functional properties of each sense and empirical observations. It shows the semantic maps of the adjectives: In English ‘light’ colexifies all the senses related to ‘not strong’, ‘not much’ and some parts of ‘not heavy’ and ‘not serious’, but in Korean ‘gabeopdda’ only colexifies the parts of the senses related to ‘not strong’ and some parts of ‘not heavy’ and ‘not serious’. In Korean ‘gabeopdda’ doesn't colexify the sense of ‘not much’. That means the senses of Korean ‘gabeopdda’ and English ‘light’ are different. This study reveals the similarities and differences of the two languages senses. In English the meaning of ‘a light mouth’ is only weight but in Korean ‘gabeopdda’ mouth expresses the equivalent of ‘a big mouth’ in English. For example, to say that ‘he has a big mouth’ means ‘he is talkative’. Did you mean to say ‘he has a light mouth’ means ‘he is talkative’?
