- Abstract
- The control of greenhouse gases, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and total volatile organic compounds (TVOCs) is arguably the most challenging issue in the chemical industry as well as automobile industry. Solvent-based polyurethanes (PU) and their foams have been widely used for automobile but emit high level VOCs. To reduce VOCs, the autocatalystic polyols (ACP) were obtained by the reaction of a polyol and an amine catalyst which is strongly affected to TVOCs and amine emissions. The PU foams were prepared by using ACP and their emission behaviors were measured by HPLC and GC/MSD. Although the commercial PU foam showed 211,354 ㎍/g and 2,170 ㎍/g, for TVOCs and amine emission, respectively, TVOCs and amine emissions of the PU foam synthesized by ACP were 84,252 ㎍/m³ and 425 ㎍/㎥, respectively. Comparing to the normal PU foam, TVOCs and amine emissions of ACP2 PU foam were reduced by about 60% and 80%, respectively. Moreover, the physical properties of ACP PU foam, fire retardant, resistant elasticity, and compression shrinkage, were almost similar to those of commercial PU foam. The results indicate that ACP-2 PU foam could reduce TVOCs and amine emissions.
