An Analysis of Students’ Perceptions about English Writing Activities in High School
Abstract
Recent research has shown, in many English classrooms in Korea, that writing activities seem to be less often found than those of other skills. In addition, little is known about how high school students perceive teaching and learning writing activities in the English classrooms in Korea. Thus, this study was conducted to explore Korean students’ perceptions about English writing activities in high school. There were one hundred and fifty high school junior participants from Busan, Korea. Data was collected using the questionnaires to measure students’ perceptions of different approaches to teaching and learning writing activities in educational settings. The findings indicate that for most students, writing seems to be the most difficult skill in English. Also, students showed low levels of interest in English writing while at the same time being highly motivated to improve their writing skills. Regarding the relationship between the students’ English levels, percentage of students’ enrolled in private english classes and hours of English study per week, the study found that students with high levels of interest in English seem to display higher levels of interest in English writing and writing activities as well as greater participation during classes. In this paper, providing student-centered writing activities which keep students engaged, developing teaching and learning materials and methods in line with the national English curriculum revised in 2015, and relevant pedagogical implications for teacher education are discussed and recommended.
