Abstract

This study examines, for successful commercialization of the results from public researches, which kind of business types are suitable in the early stage of technology commercialization, clarifies the difficulties in the full-scale stage of technology commercialization and then draws policy implications, focused on Busan region. First, we investigated which factors are considered important when choosing the business type by surveying the representatives of research institute companies. As a follow-up study, we identified the difficulties for successful commercialization by examining the technical commercialization stake-holders in different perspectives dividing them into four groups and suggested policy implications. In order to perform this study, we surveyed 112 people applying AHP methodology, which enables determining criticality levels and priorities collectively for various criteria. The implications of the result are as follows: first, the main factors that activate technology commercialization are technical factors, especially technical excellence and refinement. Companies in Busan are lack of R&D capabilities and taken the circumstances into consideration, it is important to find industry-academia-government cooperation projects using R&D capabilities of universities to refine the technology rather than on their products to raise their competitiveness, it is turned out that the companies do not have enough knowledge on it. Therefore, the countermeasures seems to be urgently needed. It also suggests that in case of Busan region, the capacity of technology intermediaries should be improved. As a policy suggestion, it stresses the necessity of Local Technology Commercialization Road-map reflected local R&D capabilities and industrial environment that this study shows. To attain this end, the region should develop its capacity to plan and implement endogenous development. It is expected that this study leads to various themes of studies, including technology commercialization, on technology management field targeting local companies and researchers. The limitations include that different subjects were surveyed on two conducted surveys and that the types of companies were uncategorized. In the future, I would continue on the study by using methodology combined with AHP and other techniques, by using financial data and the comparative study with other regions.
