- A study on analysis of the Influence factors on survival probability of new technology-based start-ups : Focus on IOT industry
- Abstract
- The importance of the fourth industrial revolution has emerged worldwide since the Davos Forum in 2016, with the Internet of Things (IoT) industry at its center. The fourth industrial revolution is expected to spread to all industries, especially enabling tech startups to have new entrances to market and have high added value. Nurturing tech startups to be hidden champions is a solution to the growth-without-employment problem and decreasing profitability of existing companies. This research was conducted by an new technology startup company that opened in 2012 and targeted on the technical evaluation data of the companies that applied for warranty support to the Korea Technology Guarantee Fund in that year. The Cox proportional risk model was applied to analyze the survival impact factors, and 23 detailed indicators of management's capabilities, technical value, marketability and business feasibility were used as independent variables. According to the analysis, the factors that affect positive (+) over the survival period of new technology-based startup companies that operate IoT businesses were found to have five categories, including technical skill level, CEO's level of understanding on the technology, technological self-reliance, market availability, and funding capability. However, level of experience on peer industry and technology life cycle had rather negative effects. This was judged to be a negative factor in the survival of technology start-ups in the new stages of IoT industry as the new business models emerge through convergence and connection between technologies in fourth industrial revolution, and opportunities to overtake existing businesses is in a short period of time, and especially since IoT industry has a very short life cycle and is an area where innovation is active.
This research has discrimination in that it analyzed the Influence factors on survival probability of new technology-based start-ups by using the technology assessment data, rather than the financial statement data of new technology based start-ups, focusing on the IoT industry. The results of this survival analysis are meaningful in creating new growth engines and achieving policy efficiency through choice and concentration by providing meaningful information in selecting companies with high viability in the era of the fourth industrial revolution, including the IoT industry.
