Abstract
The Yeonghae depression is located in the zone of the Yangsan fault system, a potentially active fault system in the Republic of Korea and has been interpreted as a basin. Thus, the study of the architecture and tectonic evolution of the Yeonghae basin is important to interpret the basin formation mechanism and to enhance our understanding of the Yangsan fault system.
For this study, we carried out remote sensing data analysis and structural geology fieldwork. Digital Elevation Model (DEM) was used to highlight the depression area, marginal faults, and major structures in the study area. structural geology fieldwork was performed to understand the nature of the bounded faults and to collect structural data. Remote sensing analysis reveals that the study area is clearly depressed in comparison to the surrounding area, the depression is extended in NNE-SSW and bounded by three major lineaments. The fieldwork indicated that the eastern bounded fault is right-lateral strike-slip fault dipping steeply to the east, representing the northern extension of the Yangsan fault segment. Whereas the western margin is bounded by an oblique right-lateral strike-slip fault associated with normal faults. The kinematics indicators along the strike-slip marginal faults demonstrate that these faults have been experienced both sinistral and dextral strike-slip movements.
The architectures of the Yeonghea depression structures suggested that the basin was developed as a pull-apart basin during the left-lateral movement of Yangsan fault, under the NNW-SSE compression which was occurred in the late-Miocene. Later on, the bounded faults reactivated as right-lateral strike-slip faults due to the change in the compression stress direction to ENE-WSW-to-E-W. Consequently, the basin started closing and uplifting.
This study enables us to classify Yeonghae depression as an inverted pull-apart basin. Moreover, two opposite strike-slip movements along the major marginal faults indicate multiple deformations of the Yangsan fault system developed along the eastern margin of the Korean peninsula.
