break의 의미 유형과 목적어 연어에 따른 한국어 대응표현 연구
- Abstract
- The purpose of this study is to categorize the meaning types of the verb ‘break’ by analyzing the noun objective collocations by means of the COCA (Corpus of Contemporary American English) program and to provide the pattern of its Korean corresponding expressions with variations depending on the noun objective collocations. This study also aims to help Korean EFL learners maximize their understanding of the polysemous verb ‘break’ for the improvement of their foreign language skills. To achieve these purposes, the study classifies the verb meaning types by analyzing the noun objectives collocated with the verb ‘break’. This study also provides semantic maps based on the meaning types of the verb. Finally, the pattern of Korean corresponding expressions of the verb ‘break’ is investigated when it collocates with the noun objectives.
From the corpus research, the outcomes of the analysis are as follows: First, for the frequency of the meaning categorizations, ‘destroy’ shows the highest frequency and ‘discontinue’ is the second highest, followed by ‘breach’. Secondly, the verb ‘break’ has different kinds of meanings types according to the meaning categorizations, which are ‘destroy’, ‘discontinue’ and ‘breach’. The detailed meaning types of the verbs are as follows: ‘destroy’ has two meaning types. One is ‘disintegrate’, which is also subdivided into ‘fragment’, ‘separate’ and ‘burst’, and the other is ‘discard’. The other two meaning types are the same: ‘discontinue’ has ‘disconnect’and ‘stop’ and ‘breach’ has ‘violate’ and ‘disobey’.
In addition to the meaning types, this study examines how the English verb ‘break’translates into Korean when it collocates with objective nouns. When the verb ‘break’ is translated, it shows various Korean expression patterns and the expressions of the Korean counterparts differ according to the kinds of the objectives noun. For example, many Korean destructive verbs are used depending on the shapes and materials of the objects which are broken. Also, there are many Korean expressions related to the other meaning types for the verb ‘break’ and Korean has numerous counterparts for the verb ‘break’which become clear with the analysis of the translation patterns.
