A Study on Pragmatic Competence of Korean through Movies
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate pragmatic competence of Korean EFL(English as a Foreign Language) learners through three different empirical studies. Language competence includes not only the grammatical ability but also the pragmatic competence. The former is to use correct vocabularies or sentences and the latter is to use the language appropriately depending on given situation(Canale & Swain, 1980).
The first study is to investigate the aspects of English politeness use of Korean EFL learners in terms of pragmatic competence. For this study, an analysis was conducted based on the translation assignment which was for the students in the department of interpreting and translating. Korean EFL learners tried to use proper English politeness strategies, even though there were difficulties in translation because of the difference concept between Korean and English politeness. However, the use of English politeness was limited to such strategies as auxiliary verb, we-form.
The second study is to compare awareness of politeness between native English speaking teachers and Korean English teachers. A survey for this study was conducted to identify awareness of English politeness of each. The results of the survey show that there were differences in awareness between native English speaking teachers and Korean English teachers, which were 4 questions out of 10. Based on this survey, Koreans need to improve of English politeness.
The third study is to identify the need of different approach depending on the research materials. A research for this study was conducted for university students in two steps according to the research material, script and video. The results of the research show that there was a difference in pragmatic competence. Therefore, there should be meaningful discussions about distinction between written text and spoken(video) to measure pragmatic awareness.
Three different studies are conducted to identify pragmatic competence of non-native English speakers. As a result, non-native English speakers need to improve their politeness awareness in terms of pragmatic competence.
