Abstract

Abalone(Haliotis spp.) aquaculture in Korea has grown for 20 years with advances in aquaculture technologies and facilities, resulting in sharp increase of abalone production. However, the drastic growth led to serious problems. The typical problems are environmental issues associated with mass mortalities from a high-density culture in limited farms and biological issues such as reductions of genetic diversity by inbreeding. These have resulted in continuous financial difficulty and increasing mortalities. Therefore, aquaculture farmers, demand for a species which grows fast. Alternatively, hybrid abalones formed from two species were produced. Comparative analyses on income and cost of production based on experimental results for growth and survival rates of the hybrid abalone were conducted. Also, sensitivity analyses for very uncertain survival rate, a price of the juvenile abalone, and selling prices were performed. This study identified the highest value of NPV for hybrid abalone. Although the result of economic evaluation for existing species was good, considering higher profits abalone aquaculture specialized in hybrid species was considered to be advantageous.
