Coagulation and Dissolved Air Flotation as Pretreatment for Seawater Desalination
Abstract
Seawater desalination using reverse osmosis(RO) process has increased substantially in the recent past and is expected to grow at an increasingly rapid pace in the future. Successful operation of a seawater reverse osmosis(SWRO) plant depends on the ability of the pretreatment system to consistently produce adequately pretreated water for the subsequent RO process. Coagulation and dissolved air flotation pretreatment processes were experimented for seawater reverse osmosis plant.
The pre-treatment samples used in the seawater desalination process were collected at 2m from the seabed surface at high tide. The pH of the seawater used for pretreatment was 8.0 to 8.3, COD was less than 1.5 mg/L, and turbidity was lower than 1.0 NTU.
The results of the main effects are as follows : The pH were main effects of turbidity and ORP, the Fe injection rate was main effects of UV254, Salinity and COD.
As a result of the dissolved air flotation test, according to the removal efficiencies of CODMn, turbidity and salinity, hydraulic retention time of dissolved air flotation was required 16 to 20 minutes.
