Abstract

Purpose The purpose of this study was to identify the impact of hope, peripheral neuropathy and social support on self-care agency in gynecologic cancer receiving chemotherapy.

Methods Data were collected from December 15, 2019 to July 31, 2020 using a structured questionnaire with 139 gynecologic cancer receiving chemotherapy in the B National University Hospital. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson’s correlations and multiple regression analysis with the SPSS 25.0 program.

Result 1. The mean score of hope was 2.92±0.41, peripheral neuropathy was 45.25±12.65, social support was 3.64±0.59, and self-care agency was 4.52±0.74.

2. Self-care agency was significantly correlated with hope (r=.729, p<.001) and social support (r=.469, p<.001). There were significant negative correlations between self-care agency and peripheral neuropathy (r=-.181, p=.033).

3. In a multiple regression, hope (β=.685, p<.001), social support (β=.172, p=.006) and 40’s age (β=.242, p<.001) were associated with self-care agency. These three variables accounted for 60.0% of the total variance in self-care agency in gynecologic cancer receiving chemotherapy (F=26.823, p<.001).

Conclusion The results suggest that intervention programs to increase the level of hope and social support would improve the self-care agency of gynecologic cancer receiving chemotherapy
