This study is intended to provide Sinhala speakers with basic teaching material for Korean language pronunciation. To that end, it collated the Korean and Sinhala plosive systems by phonation types and acoustically analyzed the cause of the errors occurring when Sinhala speakers pronounce Korean three-way plosives.
First, Chapter I looked at the foregoing studies carried out on the subject of Sinhala speakers. For not a few country speakers there have been studies on Korean lenis, tense and aspirated plosives, which foreign people commonly find difficult to pronounce. But in Korea, pronunciation-related studies on the subject of Sinhala speakers is just starting. There being no studies on Korean lenis, tense and aspirated plosives that can cause a problem to communication, this study indicated the necessity for teaching Sinhala speakers the right pronunciation of such Korean sounds.
Chapter II collated the plosive systems between Korean and Sinhala languages. The result made it possioble to predict the learner’s errors. Contrast of plosive system enabled to grasp the difference while acoustic analysis allowed understanding the plosive characteristics of the two languages via VOT and F0 (pitch). Through the difference of the two langaues in VOT and F0 (pitch), it was possible to predict the errors that can occur when Sinhala speakers pronounce Korean plosives.
In Chapter III, acoustic analysis of Sinhala speakers’ pronunciation of Korean plosives at the beginning of a word enabled to find the causes of the errors that occur under the influence of Sinhala plosives when Sinhala speakers pronounce Korean lenis, tense and aspirated consonants.
In addition. hearing experiment was conducted on the subject of Koreans to see if the errors expected from the analytic data on the causes of errors were the same as those produced when Sinhala speakers actually pronounced Korean plosives.
Chapter IV, based on the actual errors discussed earlier, proposed a plan to teach Sinhala speakers how to pronounce Korean lenis, tense and aspirated sounds. Also, to improve the high-pitch incidences that occur when Sinhala speakers pronounce Korean plosives, this study proposed a natural Korean pronunciation by designating piano pitches in agreement to Korean speakers’ pitch (F0) in lenis, tense and aspirated pronunciation after measuring both pitches (F0). Accordingly, it was found that Korean lenis corresponds to piano pitch A2 (La), tense to C3 (Do) and aspirated to D3 (Re), respectively.
To propose a teaching plan for Sinhala speakers to pronounce Korean plosives at the beginning of a word, this study collated plosives of the two languages, analyzed the cause of problems and proposed a fit teaching plan.
