China is one of the countries with the largest e-sports industry market in the world and the country where the e-sports industry is growing at the fastest rate. China's e-sports industry is growing rapidly under the leadership of the central and local governments, but there are hardly any data on the development of the e-sports industry centering on the regions selected by the government. World-class e-sports competitions are already held every year, and data on Shanghai, which has grown into a government-led e-sports industrial city, are remarkably lacking. In addition, it is a reality that the work of updating data such as reports and academic materials related to the e-sports industry is progressing very slowly. In this regard, it is necessary to understand the overall status, characteristics, and policies of the e-sports industry in Shanghai. While the e-sports industry is growing around the world, the size of the e-sports industry in China is also rapidly increasing.
This is because the interest in e-sports and the scale of the e-sports industry are continuously increasing not only in large cities in China, but also in small and medium-sized cities. Considering that Shanghai, the economic city of China, is growing the scale of the e-sports industry by attracting world-class e-sports competitions, and that the pace of development of the e-sports industry in Shanghai is far ahead of other cities, Shanghai. The need for research on the current state of the city's e-sports industry is raised.
This thesis attempts to understand the development process of the e-sports industry in China and to understand the e-sports industry in general. In addition, I would like to study the e-sports industry in Shanghai by selecting Shanghai, an economic city in China and rapidly growing e-sports industry. Therefore, the research purpose of this thesis is as follows.
First, it aims to understand e-sports and e-sports industry as a whole. Through this, we will understand the precise concept of e-sports and examine the concept of e-sports industry and the elements that make up the e-sports industry. Furthermore, it is intended to examine the characteristics of the e-sports industry and the value of the e-sports industry as a new industry.
Second, the purpose of this study is to understand the development process of the e-sports industry in China and the e-sports industry in Shanghai. We will describe how the e-sports industry has developed in China and examine how the e-sports industry ecosystem in Shanghai is structured.
Third, the purpose of this study is to organize the policies on the e-sports industry announced by the Chinese government, and to understand the guidelines for the e-sports industry at the Shanghai municipal government level and representative policies of administrative districts in Shanghai. Since China's e-sports industry is undergoing rapid development led by the government, the industry grows through the policies of the Chinese government and the guidelines of local governments. In the case of Shanghai, as the e-sports industry is growing rapidly, centered on e-sports competitions and leagues, policies related to e-sports competitions and infrastructure must be looked at.
Fourth, the purpose of this study is to examine the factors that enabled Shanghai to grow into an e-sports industry city through the e-sports industry ecosystem and various policies of the central and city governments.
This thesis focuses on the overall understanding of China's e-sports industry and examining the current status and industrial policies of the e-sports industry in Shanghai. This will be helpful for the development direction of the e-sports industry in Korea, and it will be possible to find implications for the future development of the e-sports industry in Busan. Furthermore, it is expected that the Korean e-sports industry will be utilized to find a way for the Chinese e-sports industry to grow together through the study of this thesis.
