An Analysis of Mongolian Fisheries Structure

Abstract
Thirty-one species and subspecies of fish are part of economic importance in Mongolia. In this landlocked country the present annual catch of about 600 t comes mostly from lakes, both freshwater and saline. The estimated commercial fishery potential is 3000 t/yr, to which should be added an unknown, but probably a fairly substantial subsistence and sport fishery catch.
The current national annual catch of 130 t needs to be substantially increased if the present fish consumption in Mongolia of about 1 kg per person per year is to rise, which this could be achieved by improving inputs into the industry and better management. During the year 2007-2009, the total of Mongolian fisheries export was declined in volume and value, whereas the import increased. At present Mongolia has no aquaculture, largely due to the extremely harsh continental climate, with annual temperatures ranging from +30oC to -50oC, with long winters and thick ice cover on lakes and rivers. It is proposed to improve the fisheries sector in Mongolia through the reorganizing fisheries structure equipped with staffed with specialists, and strengthen it with proper fisheries related law with the objective of providing adequate advice for further development of fisheries in Mongolia.
