- The Effect of Leisure Activities on Job Stress by Public Service Personnel : Moderating Effect of Gender
- Abstract
- With an object to assess the influence of leisure activities of public service personnel on their job stress and to identify moderating effect of gender on leisure activities influencing job stress, this study conducted an analysis in use of eight independent variables(culture and art viewing, culture and art participating, sports participating, tour, hobby and entertainment, socialization and others).
Frequency analysis indicated that as for average monthly expense for leisure activities, KRW 50-100,000 occupied largest proportion of 23.5%, followed by KRW 100,000-150,000 of 22%, and KRW 150,000 – 200,000 and over KRW 250,000 of 17.5%, respectively while KRW 200,000 – 250,0000 of 16% and under KRW 50,000 of 3.5% which was the lowest. In average, the proportional input against monthly income to leisure activity had not yet great. As for the motivation for leisure activity participation, the response for self-satisfaction and life-rewarding ranked top with 31.5% followed by 23% of stress easing, 21% of fatigue recovery and resting, 18% of health maintenance and enhancement. This proportion of responses indicated that the leisure activities had certain effects for stress easing.
The leisure activities which had meaningful co-relationship with job stress are sports viewing, tour and resting. It indicated that relatively static activities such as sports viewing, tour and resting contribute to stress easing.
As for the hypothesis that leisure activities influencing job stress would differ depending on gender, it was noticed that leisure activities having positive impact on job stress for male were sports participation and tour while greater sports viewing and resting lowers job stress of female.
Job stress was lowered by extroverted and active sports participation and tourism activities for males while introverted and passive sports viewing and resting were leisure activities influencing job stress for females. As for administrative public service personnel, they lacked physical activities due to work features since they had great deal of paper works so that active activity like sports participation and dynamic activity like tour influences on reducing of job stress. It was analyzed, however that females focused on static and rest oriented leisure activities using leisure time since they had relatively greater physical activities due to child caring and housekeeping along with work in the office.
As indicated by the outcome of this study, leisure activity influencing on job stress differed depending on gender so that sound leisure activities playing a role of buffer against job stress should be promoted in line with gender features. In addition, efforts to develop stress-proof work condition should come ahead of others.
