Study of trace metal bioconcentration in the minke whale
Abstract
To determine the concentration of trace metals in the tissues of whale from the coastal ocean of Korea, the concentration of trace metals(Cu, Cd, Pb, As, Zn and T-Hg) in the tissues(liver, intestine, muscle, epidermis and blubber) of minke whale(Balaenoptera acutorostrata) entangled from the eastern coast of Korea in 2009 was measured. The bioconcentration factors(BCFs) using the concentration of seawater, anchovy and euphausiid was also estimated in order to evaluate the accumulation of trace metals in the tissues of whale. The highest and lowest concentrations of Cu, Cd, Zn, and Hg were found in the liver and blubber, respectively. In contrast, the highest concentrations of As and Pb were found in the blubber and intestine, respectively, and the lowest concentrations were found in the muscle. The accumulation trend of trace metals in the tissues except the blubber was in the order Zn > Cu > As > Pb ≧ Hg ≧ Cd. No significant difference in the concentrations of trace metals were found between mature/male and immature/female individuals of minke whale. On the basis of the bioconcentration factor (BCFs), liver in the tissue of minke whale is an important target organ for metal accumulation.
