- Abstract
- In Busan, according to the five-day school week system, the government․local autonomous entities and private institutions are operating the Saturday program with various contents in diverse ways. However, the Saturday program promoted along with the general execution of the five-day school week system with the consideration of the local communities has been neglected by the proper party, the students, who have to receive that education for learning as the participation rate of the students remains as 10% only.
Thereupon, this study investigates the actual status of Saturday program operation in Busan and explores the routes for acquiring information about the Saturday program and satisfaction with the program operation with the subjects of middle school students residing in Busan in order to develop efficient operation methods and also find ways to enhance the participation rate of the students.
Therefore, with the subjects of 569 first, second, and third graders at 3 middle schools located in Busan, this research investigated the actual status of Saturday program operation in Busan to figure out the participation rate and satisfaction of the Saturday program, efficient operation methods for the Saturday program and ways to encourage participation in the Saturday program.
The study results can be summed up as below:
First, according to the result of examining their participation in the Saturday program In Busan, students not participating are up to about 70%, which is very high. And among those that have participated, even more than a half of them answered they participated just once to three times; thus, the students’ participation in the Saturday program was considerably low.
Second, regarding the level of education of the Saturday program, 67.5% of those having participated answered it was the intermediate level. And next, 4.5% said that the level of education was low, and those who responded that its level was too low took up 8.0%; thus, it is regarded as a low-level educational program by most of the students.
Third, about the contents of education of the Saturday program, the rate of the responses, ‘medium’, ‘not very satisfying’, and ‘unsatisfactory’ was up to 55.1%; so the students are not very satisfied with the Saturday program in terms of the contents of education.
Fourth, regarding the responses about the methods to encourage students who have not participated in the Saturday program, 42.4% of the students answered more diverse programs should be developed further. According to the result of investigating the operational methods for the local community Saturday program, 30.4% of the students answered the most important thing to be done is to lessen the financial burden on the students by providing the program for free. According to the research, 26.2% answered that the second most important thing to be done is to operate more diverse programs which students demand.
Therefore, it is needed to install cooperative Saturday program support centers to be operated collaboratively by local autonomous entities and the offices of education afterwards. And it is necessary to figure out which institution should take charge of the Saturday program according to the requests from teachers and students so that the proper institution can secure the budget and manpower and build a system to develop and operate the Saturday program.
