Detoxification effects of dietary antioxidants levels on mercury toxicity in juvenile olive flounder, Paralichthys olivaceus
Abstract
The present study was conducted to evaluate the detoxification effects of dietary antioxidants on mercury toxicity in juvenile olive flounder, Paralichthys olivaceus. In the first experiment, the results indicated that dietary mercury threshold level of toxicity in juvenile olive flounder could be 4.64 mg HgCl2/kg diet at the molecular level and 55.9 mg HgCl2/kg diet at the whole body external growth level. In the second, third, and fourth serial experiments, the results indicated that dietary selenium with (2 mg selenomethionine/kg diet), vitamin C with (200 mg L-ascorblyl-2-monophosphate/kg diet), and vitamin E with (200 mg DL-a-tocopheryl acetate/kg diet) may have detoxification effects on mercury toxicity based on growth performance, and total mercury concentration in liver, kidney, and muscle tissues of juvenile olive flounder.
