Taxonomic study of the family Sphyraenidae from the adjacent waters of Korea based on morphology and mitochondrial DNA
Abstract
The taxonomic review of 1 genus and 3 species in the family Sphyraenidaewas carried out based on specimens from the adjacent waters of Korea. Sphyraena japonica was easily distinguished from Sphyraena obtusata and Sphyraena pinguis in meristic characters such as gill rakers (1 in S. japonica vs. 2 in S. obtusata and S. pinguis), the number of soft rays of anal fin (8 in S. japonica vs. 9 in S. obtusata and S. pinguis) and the number of pored lateral line scales (117-140 in S. japonica vs. 78-94 in S. obtusata and S. pinguis). In morphometric characters, percentage of several characters in standard length was well different between S. obtusata and remaining two species, for example, pre-pelvic fin length (45.0-48.7 in S. japonica vs. 36.8-41.5 in S. obtusata and S. pinguis) and upper jaw length (13.8-15.2 in S. japonica vs. 10.1-13.6 in S. obtusata and S. pinguis). On the other hands, in meristic characters, S. obtusata was well distinguished from S. pinguis in the number of scales above lateral line (5.5-6.5 in S. obtusata vs. 7.5-9.5 in S. pinguis), scales below lateral line (8.5-9.5 in S. obtusata vs. 10.5-12.5 in S. pinguis), but, two species were very similar in morphometric characters.
Results of molecular analysis using 685bp mitochondrial DNA cytochrome b sequences showed that S. pinguis was the most closely clustered with S. obtusata (0.219-0.230), and was little far clustered with S. japonica (0.270-0.274), but, S. obtusata was the farest clustered with S. japonica (0.350-0.358). In morphologyand molecular analysis, S. obtusata and S. pinguis were closer rather than S. japonica.
