A Study on the Organic Patterns of Deep Ecology in Contemporary Korean Poetry
Abstract
This study investigated the poetry of Kim Ji-ha, Lee Seong-seon, and Jeong Hyeon-jong published from 1985 to the present to discuss the organic characteristics of deep ecology and drew the following conclusions:
The three poets embodied the life phenomena of individual beings in the earth ecosystem and those of individual beings in people and ecosystems with the organic theory of deep ecology as a cultural topic in response to the ecosystem crisis based on the philosophical and scientific thinking with Oriental ideology highlighted. The study applied theories presented by Hwaeom ideology, Taoism, Shicheonju ideology, Whitehead, Schrodinger, Jang Hoi-ik, David Bohm, Prigogine, Lorentz, Capra, Lovelock, and Deleuze integrated into the establishment process of deep ecology with their poems. As a result, the three poets shared relatedness, complexity, and circularity in relation to the organic patterns of deep ecology in their poems.
In the poetry of Kim Ji-ha, the investigator discussed organic characteristics with a focus on Shicheonju ideology and identified Gyeongmul ideology and equality, Shicheonju-style complexity, and circularity as re-beginning of heaven and earth in the discussion process. The investigator shed light onto equality between man and living things and between man and inorganic matters in terms of Gyeongmul ideology and equal relatedness, identified the creation of Naeyushinryeong and Oiyugihwa, Gakjiburi, and consciousness of oneness in terms of Shicheonju-style complexity, and extracted orientation from ironic order to rational order and progress from hidden order to revealed order in terms of circularity as re-beginning of heaven and earth.
In the poetry of Lee Seong-seon, the investigator discussed the organic patterns of deep ecology with a focus on Hwaeom ideology and identified life-centered mutually beneficial relatedness, Hwaeomgyeong-style complexity, and circularity as time and space transcendence. The investigator found peace through man's co-dependent relationships with plants and harmony through man's joint relationships with animals in terms of life-centered mutually beneficial relatedness, extracted the created of Sasamuae and oneness consciousness of Jingongmyoyu in terms of Hwaeomgyeong-style complexity, and identified diachronic transcendence and reincarnation consciousness and further synchronic transcendence and Beomailyeo in terms of circularity as time and space transcendence. In his poetry, the organic patterns of deep ecology were eventually brought to the characteristics integrated into Hwaeom ideology.
In the poetry of Jeong Hyeon-jong, the organic patterns of deep ecology were discussed with a focus on Taoism and Gaia ideology. His poems were structurized as criticism of anthropocentricism and reflective relatedness, Taoist complexity, and circularity as time and space integration. As a result, altruistic relatedness between individuals and harmonious relatedness between individuals and the whole were found in criticism of anthropocentricism and reflective relatedness; the creation of Gokshin and Hyeonbin and further Manmuljedong and consciousness of oneness were identified in Taoist complexity; and spatial integration and chains of beings and further time regression and consciousness of eternity were found in time and space integration.
Those discussions show that the three poets exhibit common features such as organic relatedness, complexity and circularity and, at the same time, differentiation by pursuing Shicheonju ideology, Hwaeom ideology, and Taoism, respectively. The differentiation is further highlighted as Kim Ji-ha presented an organic pattern as the will that individual human beings must transform their fundamental perceptions, Lee Seong-seon an organic pattern that emphasized a focus on life, and Jeong Hyeon-jong an organic pattern that advocated equality between man and things. In their poems, deep ecology responded to the ecosystem crisis in different ways and embodied the principles of life phenomena understood in different manners, while sharing common features as organic thinking.
Likewise, an investigation into their works in relation to today's discourse about the ecological crisis has certain limitations, but it does have some value in that it opens up a prospect of multidimensional thinking for the desirable ecosystem. However, the degree of enabling an interpretation of organic patterns of deep ecology is a phenomenon salient in the works of certain poets and requires much more researches.
