Abstract
The purpose of this study is to show the difference between the synonymous adjectives good and nice through comparison of noun collocations from COCA(the Corpus of Comtemporary American English) program. This study analyzes 300 cases for each good or nice and they are selected not randomly but intentionally by how strong the adjective-noun mutual relation is. In this way, this study tries to show the different meaning of the two adjectives contrastively by analyzing authentic corpus data. The findings of this study are as follows:
The shared meaning of the two adjectives is ‘giving you a happy or pleasant feeling’and ‘attractive.’ But the different meaning drawn from COCA is this. Good is often used to express ‘of high quality’, ‘having the necessary qualities’, ‘reasonable or sensible’, ‘morally correct’or ‘fairly large in amount, size, range’etc., so having a wider range of meaning than nice. On the other hand, nice is used to mean ‘attractive, pleasant’mostly, followed by the meaning of‘kind’which good also has in its meaning. In short, these two adjectives are not simply synonyms but they include quite different usages and meanings; therefore, acquiring collocation knowledge of each word will help you understand and distinguish them more easily.
