How To Train Your Dragon을 활용한 지도방안에 관한 연구
- Abstract
- The purpose of this study is to suggest a lesson plan to teach English using film clips in order to improve learners' communicative competence.
The study is conducted as follows: Firstly, the educational impacts of movies are studied. Movies can be effective teaching materials which provide authentic language showing real communicative situation, improve learners' affective aspects such as interest and motivation, and also introduce English-speaking culture. And this study suggests an effective lesson plan for improving English communicative competence through movies on the basis of the teaching-learning activities designed by Wood, Stempleski and Tomalin as well as the instructional models established by Allan, Williams, Kerridge, Bouman, and Altman. The lesson plan is made for first graders in middle school, using the movie How To Train Your Dragon.
Each class is basically conducted according to three stages: pre-viewing, viewing, and post-viewing. In pre-viewing stage, learners are supposed to predict the scenes from the movie and acquire the helpful background knowledge such as new vocabularies and expressions to understand the movie. In viewing stage, to grasp the general understanding of the contents, learners watch the movie with no subtitle first, then with Korean subtitle, and next with English subtitle. Then several activities are adopted to keep learners' interest and motivation. And lastly, in post-viewing stage, each class includes different activities to give learners a chance to express their own opinions, such as wanted poster, who's who, point of view, eye witness, and favorite scenes.
The conclusions of this study are as follows: First, movies can provide learners with various helpful learning activities. Second, movies can show authentic communicative situations which help learners understand what others speak and exchange their opinions naturally. Third, movies can intrigue learners' interests and participation in class because they provide vivid images and sounds.
This study is not an experimental one in that the suggested lesson plan is implemented in class, but as it has been widely accepted that movies are effective tools to improve learners' communicative competence, teachers should continue to keep their interest in using movies as teaching materials and develop proper instructional models for English classes.
