Abstract

The continued increase in cancer survival rates has also led to an interest in the health care of cancer survivors and the quality of life after cancer treatment. Since cancer survivors experience various problems related to cancer diagnosis and treatment in physical, psychological, social and economic areas, comprehensive cancer survivor integrated supportive care is needed to maintain a balance of life in all processes from diagnosis to treatment. In this regard, nurses need to know the competencies required to perform integrated supportive care for cancer survivors, evaluate the level of competencies, and continuously make efforts to improve them. The purpose of this study was to develop a Cancer Survivor Integrated Supportive Care Competence Scale to evaluate self reported competence of nurses and to test their validity and reliability. Items were developed through a literature review and focus group interviews. Nine experts reviewed the items for content validity and twenty-five nurses responded the preliminary item questionnaire for pre-test. Participants were 504 nurses recruited to test the validity and reliability of the scale. Data was analyzed using item analysis, exploratory factor analysis, confirmatory factor analysis, Pearson correlation with other scales, internal consistency and split-half reliability. In the development stage, 68 items were generated. Then, item analysis and exploratory factor analysis led to 22 items, grouped into five subscales which were labelled professionalism enhancement (5 items), care coordination (5 items), comprehensive nursing needs assessment (5 items), providing tailored information and education (4 items), recurrence surveillance and secondary cancer prevention (3 items). Confirmatory factor analysis supported good convergent and discriminant validity. The result of correlation coefficient between the spiritual care competence scale and cancer survivor integrated supportive care competence scale was found to be .57 (p<.001), and convergent validity were verified. In addition, the result of correlation coefficient between the cancer survivor nursing care confidence and developed scale was found to be .50 (p<.001), and criterion validity were verified. The internal consistency of cancer survivor integrated supportive care competence scale measured by Cronbach’s α was .91 and each factor was verified as .73 to .82. In conclusion, the cancer survivor integrated supportive care competence scale for nurses was developed as a 5-Likert self-reported scale composed 22 items of 5 factors. The results of this study indicate that cancer survivor integrated supportive care competence scale is reliable and valid instrument for nurses. It is expected to be used as a instrument for identifying the cancer survivor integrated supportive care competencies for nurses in nursing practices and contribute to advance integrated supportive care for cancer survivors.
