Abstract
The purpose of this study is to analyze language forms and their contents in the 1st-year high school and the 3rd-year middle school English textbooks based on the new revised 7th Curriculum.
The research questions of this study are: (1) How are language forms and frequencies shown in the 1st-year high school English textbooks? (2) How are language forms and frequencies shown in the 3rd-year middle school English textbooks? (3) Is there connectivity between the language forms in the 1st-year high school and the 3rd-year middle school English textbooks?
For this research, six high school English textbooks and five middle school English textbooks were chosen for comparison according to popularity. For the criteria of the contents of language forms, language forms necessary for communication in the 7th Education Curriculum are used.
Followings are the results of the analysis. First, by language forms necessary for communication in 7th Education Curriculum, 27 language forms are presented in six high school English textbooks. Of all language forms, the highest frequency language forms are infinitives, conjunctions, participial constructions and relative pronouns. D contains the highest 21 examples of the language forms and has the highest percentage of the contents of the language forms. Regarding the frequency of use of the language forms, B is the highest of all the textbooks. Partial negations, intransitive and transitive verbs, attendant circumstance structures and prepositions are not presented in the language forms necessary for communication in the 7th Education Curriculum. Therefore, language forms that are not presented suggested to be added to the language forms necessary for communication in the 7th Education Curriculum.
Second, by language forms necessary for communication in the 7th Education Curriculum, 26 language forms are presented in five middle school English textbooks. Of all language forms, the highest frequency language forms are infinitives, conjunctions, relative pronouns, noun modifiers, and the subjunctive moods. Verb phrases, prepositional phrases, negative adverbs, partial negations, and attendant circumstance structures are not presented in the language forms necessary for communication in the 7th Education Curriculum. Therefore, language forms that are not presented needed to be added to the language forms necessary for communication in curriculum.
Third, the language forms commonly presented both in the 3rd-year middle school textbooks and in the 1st-year high school textbooks are infinitives, conjunctions(subordinates, correlatives), and relative pronouns. Particularly, relative pronouns have shown continuity between the 3rd-year middle school textbooks and the 1st-year high school textbooks in that the 3rd-year middle school textbooks account for relative pronouns, and relative adverbs and compound relative pronouns are dealt with in the 1st-year high school textbooks.
According to the result of the study, language forms necessary for communication in the 7th Education Curriculum should be continually revised while considering the connectivity of language forms.
