Abstract

This paper reviews the adherence to the rules of the revised Romanization system of Korean in Korean society. The study examines its usage in areas such as cultural assets, persons' and companies' names, road signs, and university names. Even though it has been over 10 years since the new official Korean language Romanization system was established, we can still easily find non-adherence to it in the written names of various persons, businesses, and institutions across Korea. It is speculated that this is due in part to the fact that a lot of Koreans have not yet familiarized themselves with the current system and many have also experienced considerable influence from directly learning the English language which is prevalent among Korean students of all ages. It is recommended that some necessary measures be taken at the national level to disseminate the newly revised system so foreigners in Korea and abroad can find consistency in Romanized Korean and also better understand Korean language.
