A Case Study on the Effect of Extensive Reading and the Improvement of the Students' Writing Ability

Abstract The purpose of this study is to explore the effect of extensive reading and the improvement of the students' writing ability through extensive reading. Three middle school students participated in an extensive reading club for seven months. They were encouraged to read as many books within their English proficiency level as possible. This club meeting was guided by this researcher, their English teacher. They had English reading activities after school in the school's English library. Students wrote a reading log, reading journal, and a book report in their reading diaries while reading. The teacher observed the students' reading and writing activities continuously and interviewed them at the end of the program. The students showed self-confidence and interest in English after the extensive reading activities for seven months. They also showed an improvement in their English writing abilities as they wrote book reports many times. The result of this study indicates that students can have self-confidence and interest in English when they participate in extensive reading activities continuously. They can also improve their English writing ability through this process.
