A Study on Work Ability Improvement Methods for Petrochemical Industry Workers
Abstract
Korea petrochemical industry has played the important role in Korea economic development since 1962 and its facilities continually increased with supporting economic booming from 1980’s to 1990’s.

But as increasing average age of employees as times goes by, many employees will retire within 10 years according to the present retiring program which is that 58 to 60 year old age employee shall retire in Korea. It means new recruit employee will replace in near future instead of well experience and trained engineer and operator’s position. If new employees are not prepared enough knowledge and experience timely with going by this retiring program, it will be big safety vulnerability issue in the petrochemical industry with aging the process facility.

These process accidents such as fire or explosion or toxic gas dispersion can make serious effect to public residents and other 3rd party facilities around the plant area. Also it is big loss of property in the view of Korea economic nature. Therefore managing work environment, health and job stress for technical personnel become emerging issues as much as maintain process facility.

The study contains that evaluation of petrochemical employee’s job skill from questionnaires such as ‘WAI’(The Work Ability Index) which is FIOH(Finland Industrial Occupational Health) developed and ‘Korean Job Stress Evaluation Questionnaire’ of KOSHA (Korea Occupational Safety Health Association). Based on this result, separated interviews were performed, too. This study shows analyses of the job skill issue and proposal of measure from above survey and activity.

According to study, there was not much significant difference between job stress and work ability from aging and continuous service year, but important one was from working type and occupational category. It means petrochemical industry shall focus on working type and occupational category to reduce job stress and improve job skill. Also the current certain age (58 ~ 60) retiring program shall be reconsidered and modified in the view of retention old but well experience and knowledgeable employee’s retention for maintain process safety.

Also, the main reasons of high level job stress are from bossy organization, incomplete compensation program and other company typical strict culture according to survey of high ranked job stress groups (50 ~ 25%). It is also necessary to be improved in petrochemical industry.
