(Abstract)

The purpose of this thesis is to explore the method of teaching Shakespeare’s plays in the classroom for junior high and senior highschool students. Shakespeare’s works prove the most eligible text to acquire communicative competence and develop an effective English teaching method through various activities - play, writing a letter and chanting, role play etc. This study also attempts the application of these drama of teaching in the real classroom. Recently, there has been a lot of interest of practical use of English drama in the classroom. Also, there have been many attempts to apply skits of English drama to English language teaching. Because these attempts give many students secondhand experience by mentioning social backgrounds literary works include. The secondhand experience is acquired by being members of the society in the literary works at that time and all the students can appreciate literary works well through the secondhand experience. I surveyed author’s preference to apply literary works to practical use of English teaching. As the result, Shakespeare was chosen overwhelmingly by students. I think Shakespearean plays are effective in learning English if they are offered to the students in easily accessible and modernized English, and enable students to achieve language proficiency and literary understanding.
In spite of this facts, I knew that any English textbook doesn’t include Shakespeare’ works in Korea now. Because Shakespeare’ drama was written in medieval English which is different from current English.
Hence, All the students can’t appreciate easily by introducing these dramas.
But I want to ease these a sense of frustration at it by reinterpretation of dramas of Shakespeare. These teaching methods of practical use of drama will give students literary refinement and appreciation of situation of the times. Also, I think all the students can take part in English class actively by doing this activity for themselves. I think developing an effective English teaching and acquiring a communicative competence can be done through reinterpretation text.
