Abstract
This study aims to provide theoretical background that children?s literature can be effectively employed to teach Korean middle school students by illustrating specific classroom tasks using E. B. White?s popular children̓s book, Charlotte̓s Web.
Using literature in an English class is beneficial for a number of reasons. First, literature has interesting plots and themes which would stimulate students? interest and elicit their motivation. Second, literature provides students with indirect experience of target culture as it contains real life situation. It also helps students develop various language skills by providing contextualized text.
Children?s literature can be highly beneficial to Korean middle school learners, especially if it is chosen well. Children?s novels tend to be more interesting and have less complex structures in terms of language expressions and contents than any other genre of literature, which would ultimately lead learners to complete their reading successfully. Students gain a sense of achievement through this experience and become more motivated to try other reading.
When using English literature to teach students, three activities are suggested: pre-reading, while-reading, post-reading. In the pre-reading stage, activities are designed to evoke students? interest and to help learners with difficult vocabulary. During the while-reading stage, various activities are devised to understand the story. In this stage, it is more important for the students to get the gist of the story and a feeling for English culture than to interpret the story sentence by sentence. In the post-reading stage, activities are designed to encourage follow-up reading. I believe the activities introduced in this study can help teachers teach English through children?s literature in Korean middle school.
