- Abstract
- In keeping with the development of the cultural creative industry and digital technology recently, the Broadcast Content Industry has risen as one of the most promising industries that will possibly develop into a competitive value added field. In this situation the competitiveness of the Broadcast Content Industry is directly linked with a nation’s overall competitiveness.
The ultimate goal of this thesis is to provide for an opportunity which can be a help to promote the development of the Chinese and Korean Broadcasting Content Industry by analyzing the international competitiveness of the Chinese and Korean Broadcast Content Industry based on the Generalized Diamond Model.
For this purpose, the various determinants of international competitiveness of the Broadcast Content Industry consist of 20 sub-determinants and 30 evaluative scales. Data was collected from previous studies and reports of international institutions, such as the WEF (World Economic Forum), World Bank, OECD, and other such organizations. Moreover, an important set of evaluative scales were identified by the entropy weighting method.
The competitive enlightenment of the industry was studied by analyzing four main determining factors of competitiveness including the factor condition, demand conditions, related and supporting industries, firms’ strategy, structure, and rivalry, in basis of the Generalized Diamond Model. The analyses of the empirical results were revealed as follows.
Through the domestic diamond model, we can see the competitiveness of Chinese Broadcast Content Industry was weak and assessed as a low value on the whole. On the other hand, the Korean domestic diamond was relatively balanced when compared with China. The international competitiveness was assessed as a relatively high value.
Through the international diamond model it can be seen that except for the demand conditions, in terms of the factor conditions, related and supporting industries, firms’ strategy, structure and rivalry, the competitiveness of the Korean Broadcast Content Industry was lower than those of China.
Based on the result of this thesis, there are several ways to promote the international competitiveness of Chinese and Korean broadcast content industries, which is stated as follows.
First, compared with Korea, China should focus on the human resource factor of broadcasting especially in R&D by expanding government expenditure and investment.
Second, both countries should go on strengthening and increasing the domestic demand of TV & radio programmes. Also, the researcher, according to the consumer demand, should propose diverse TV & radio programs.
Third, the market size of broadcast content industry is smaller than those of China. To facilitate the production and distribution of content, measures to facilitate interoperability among the many different systems and vendors involved in the digital distribution of content need to be taken into consideration for the Korean government.
Forth, the copyright related issues need to be raised within the broadcast content industry as a whole. Both of the countries need to protect their copyright in the digital environment. As well as adjusting the licensing system and applicable range of broadcasting contents would be a good approach to enhance the right of the author’s work.
