Abstract

A taxonomic review of the family Cynoglossidae was carried out based on three genera and eight species collected from the adjacent waters of Korea. Six species were reported in Cynoglossus whereas only one species was reported in Symphurus and Paraplagusia, respectively. Among three genera, the genus Symphurus was easily distinguished from the genus Paraplagusia and Cynoglossus by snout shape (not hooked in Symphurus vs. hooked in Cynoglossus and Paraplagusia) and location of mouth (anterior tip of snout in the former vs. below of lower eye in the latter). The genus Paraplagusia differed from the genus Cynoglossus in having many fringes with ocular lips. The six Cynoglossus species are well-distinguished by the following single character or combination characters: the number of lateral lines on ocular side, the number of interlinear scales between dorsal and median lines, clarity of lateral lines, and proportion of body depth in standard length. Yokogawa et al. (2008) and Yamada et al. (2009) mentioned that C. interruptus recorded in Korea is C. ochiaii as a new species. However, we revealed based on specimens collected in Busan that C. interruptus recorded in Korea is not C. ochiaii. C. interruptus differs from C. ochiaii in the two morphological characters: single scale row between supraorbital line and midlateral line in C. interruptus, whereas no scale row in C. ochiaii; mostly two scales present above dorsolateral line in C. interruptus, whereas mostly three scales present in C. ochiaii. Among 8 recorded Cynoglossidae species in Korea, seven species (S. orientalis, P. japonica, C. abbreviatus, C. gracilis, C. interruptus, C. joyneri, and C. semilaevis) were collected from around of Korea peninsula including Jeju Island. While, C. gracilis was not collected in the present study, so it may be not distributed or rarely occurred Korean waters. Finally, a key to the three genera and eight species of the family Cynoglossidae from the adjacent waters of Korea is provided.
