Abstract

The purpose of this study is to compare the types of the way to translate Korean intransitive and transitive verbs into English and to provide functional expressions for them. It is usual to translate Korean intransitive verbs into English intransitive verbs and to interpret Korean transitive verbs into English transitive verbs. However, it has not been proved how Korean intransitive verbs are translated into English transitive verbs and how Korean transitive verbs are interpreted into English intransitive verbs. For this study, 100 Korean intransitive verbs and 100 Korean transitive verbs are examined from Young-ha Kim’s Your Republic is Calling You and its English version. This study is supported by the concepts such as volitionality and Do-language and Become-language. Korean intransitive verbs are divided into two groups; the first group is translated into English intransitive verbs and the second group is translated into English transitive verbs. When it comes to Korean intransitive verbs which are translated into English transitives, it is usual that the Korean subjects change their position into English objects. In addition, it is normal that Korean agents do not appear in the sentence but English agents represent themselves. This is because Korean is a become-language, which tries to hid animate agents but English is a do-language, which tends to represent animate agents. In terms of Korean transitive verbs that are interpreted into English intransitive verbs, the Korean objects were put into two groups. The first group was used as objects of prepositions and the second one was incorporated into English verbs.
