An analysis of the types of materials and activities found within reading sections in 8th grade English textbooks based on revised 2007 national curriculum

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to analyze the types of materials and activities from reading sections of 8th grade English textbooks used in public schools in South Korea. For the purpose of this study, five middle school English textbooks were randomly chosen and the types of materials and reading activities were analyzed.
The results of this study are as follows:
First, although the English textbooks provided a variety of learning tools, the activities related to reading comprehension were limited to essays and short stories.
Second, the textbook activities related to pre-reading, while-reading, and post-reading lacked variety and were not evenly distributed throughout the text.
In conclusion, the findings of this study suggest that there should be more consideration put into the types of writing and activities found in English textbooks for use in South Korean middle schools. When writing English textbooks, authors should consider the implications of this study to ensure that a variety of materials and reading activities are included. Furthermore, English teachers should be more discerning in their choice of textbooks, verifying that the textbook they choose for their middle school English class contains a variety of materials and activities to engage students in reading.
