A Study on the Effect of Ethnic Chinese Networks on FDI inflows into China
- Abstract
- Abstract
The Chinese government has increasingly adjusted its policies on overseas Chinese with the aim of using their economic potential as an important economic pillar for its development since China began its reform process. The weak environment of institutions in the past formed the basis for networks of relationship to often be considered as the alternatives for the formal market and legal system. The relationship between overseas Chinese and mainland China played a very important role in foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows into China mainland. The main purpose of this article is to test the effect of ethnic Chinese networks on FDI inflow to China in the recent years by using the gravity model. This paper uses classified horizontal and vertical analysis of developing and developed countries. The variables used are GNI, PGNI and distance among others. The results of the analysis show that amongst all foreign countries, the ethnic Chinese networks is significant. It would however be important to note that after conducting horizontal and vertical analysis, the effect of ethnic Chinese networks has greatly decreased in developed countries, but is still significant in developing countries.
Keywords Ethnic Chinese networks, Overseas Chinese, Foreign Direct Investment Gravity Model, Overseas Chinese capital, Developed countries, Developing countries.
