Ratatouille를 활용한 영어 학습 지도안 개발

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to suggest lesson plans to teach English using film clips in order to improve learners’ communicative competence.
The study is conducted as follows; First, the educational impacts of movies are studied. Movies can be effective teaching materials which offer authentic language in a real context, introduce the Western culture and improve learners’ affective aspects such as interest and motivation. In addition, movies provide learners with the development of four language skills including listening, speaking, reading and writing. And this study suggests effective lesson plans for improving English communicative competence through movies on the basis of activities designed by Wood, Stempleski and Tomalin. The lesson plan is made for third graders in middle school using the movie Ratatouille.
Each class is basically divided into three steps; pre-viewing, viewing and post-viewing. In previewing stage, the students are expected to predict the story based on the new vocabulary, expressions and some other activities. In viewing stage, students watch the movie with no subtitle first, then with Korean subtitle, and with English subtitle which is followed by several activities to keep students interested and motivated. Lastly, in post-viewing stage, students have a chance to express their own opinion about the movie doing activities such as writing a food review, role-play, missing posters and so on.
This study is not an experimental one in that the suggested lesson plans are implemented in class, but it has been widely accepted that movies are affective tools to improve learners’ communicative competence. Therefore, it is suggested that teachers continue to study using movies to develop proper instructional models for English classes and I hope this study can be a guide for further study on using movies in teaching English.
