Abstract

Defining curriculum as an educational planning which comprises systematically the objectives, contents, methods and evaluation standard of an educational course, this paper aims on the one hand to analyze the official curriculums of the design related high schools in Busan metropolitan city and on the other to survey, by questionnaire, opinions of their students on the curriculums. There are in all 8 design related high schools in Busan, 6 specialized high schools and 2 special-purpose high schools. The analysis of the official curriculums was made for all the 8 high schools, while the survey being carried out for 4 samples of them. The results of analysis of the curriculums and the survey data can be summarized as follows.
Concerning the objectives of design courses, all the 8 high schools are setting up as a primary goal cultivation of theoretical and technical grounding and, as secondary goals after graduation, both entering college and employment for the specialized high schools and exclusively entering college for the special-purpose high schools. The survey results show that the students understand well the primary and secondary goals of their own high schools.
For the contents of curriculum, we examined the organization of subjects of the design courses of the high schools. As they all belong to the category of special high school, the subjects are to be organized in three sectors―general and special subjects, and creative experiential activities. Among total requirements of 204 semester hours for three years in high school, the creative experiential activities are organized for 24 semester hours for all the high schools alike. But the semester hours of general and special subjects are organized differently among them within the limits of the guidelines of Busan Office of Education, which prescribe 72 semester hours at a minimum for the general subjects and 80 for the special subjects. According to the survey results, 53% of the respondents are satisfied in the ratio of semester hours between general and special subjects, while 32.2% of respondents want more semester hours of special subjects in their high school. And for the management of creative experiential activities, 39.7% of respondents are satisfied, 29% are so-so, and 31.4% are dissatisfied.
For the educational methods, we examined among others the use of specialized outside lecturers and extra curricular activities. According to the survey results, especially students of the specialized high schools pointed out lack of outside lecturers. And most students are satisfied in diverse extra curricular activities of their own school, except 'after school activity'.
To conclude, the design related high schools in Busan manage different curriculums each other according to their educational situation within the limits of guidelines of Busan Education Office, and survey results show that most students are satisfied in general in the curriculums of their own high school.
