STUDY OF DESIGN TEACHING METHOD FOR MIDDLE SCHOOL
USING STORY TELLING

Abstract

As we enter digital society, importance of design is getting emphasized in a field of culture, fine art, industry, and everywhere in our society especially in media such as advertisement, emoticons for smart phone, game characters, and so on. However, Korean students are exposed to design education only during Fine Art class as a part of curriculum, taught by non-design major teacher, while other developed countries already provide design education for grade school students for design competitiveness. There are some grade schools using particular text book for design education, but it's still prone to criticism. Storytelling, thesedays, is one of the most spotlighted teaching methods among parents of grade school students; current home school materials for grade school students are mostly talking about storytelling. As society is more mechanized with digital, mobile or media, people started to look for something more emotional, sensual and actual like storytelling. Even if it started from English education and now used most actively in a field of education, it is still limited to primary school level and below; besides, it is provided or taught barely by specialized teachers.
This study aims to activate design education and increase participation of students. This study provides a new teaching method of design education that uses storytelling for creative thinking especially for Middle school students. It is significant because it may suggest another potential of a thinking method for future education programs.

Research methods are following:
First, analyze current Fine Art text books of Middle school level, and its chapters and design parts, in order to discuss necessity to teach concepts and presentation of illustration as a field of visual design.
Second, understand definition of storytelling and its educational value based on literature, and discuss relationship between storytelling and design education. Third, provide proposal and syllabus for illustration class, and discuss creative teaching method to increase student's creating thinking and class participation. Forth, practice demo teaching to 100 Middle school students in Busan, and analyze level of interest, concentration, comprehension, confidence of students toward demo teaching though survey questionnaire.
The purpose of this study was to suggest a new program for design education using storytelling, and to investigate its actual learning effect to students for future design education. Variety of fields using storytelling already allows people to design and visualize stories they created, and it helps a lot for creative thinking or designing.
In conclusion, the study showed that design curriculum using storytelling gives positive influence to student's study achievement, satisfaction, comprehension, and creative thinking despite some limitations. Therefore, it is confirmed that design education program proposal using storytelling meets the purpose, and it is valuable as education program itself.
