Abstract

This study aims to understand the practical usage of adjective, 'strong' for Korean students. Current studies have found that to learn authentic use of language, understanding collocation is more effective than studying individual vocabulary. In order to describe the taste of coffee, for example, native speakers of English use adjective 'strong' instead of 'powerful'. The usage of adjective ‘powerful’ is pramatically improperly used, not considering the context. This is related to collocation, referring to fixed word combination that native speakers of English conventionally use. Native speakers of English acquire collocation. However, English learners in Korea have to "learn" it through practice. I extract 100 noun collocations of adjective 'strong' from COCA corpus program, organize and analyze them by frequency number. Based on results, I create an authentic English-Korean dictionary. As a result, 11 Korean meanings of adjective 'strong' are found. The most frequently collocated noun with ‘strong’ among them is abstract noun. This might be a strange result for Korean students who usually learn ‘strong’ as an adjective which explains physical meanings, because most of the English-Korean dictionary firstly define ‘strong’ as to explain a physical meaning of its collocation and its example is the concrete noun collocations after it. This study is meaningful to help Korean students understand the authentic meaning and usage of the adjective 'strong', considering the context.
