The Effects of Using the Onset-Rime Based Method in Teaching Phonics to Elementary School Children

Abstract

This study is designed to investigate the effects of using the onset/rime-based method of word reading with young learners at the elementary school level. The effectiveness of this method is examined from the perspective of both the cognitive and affective domain.
The subjects were 52 children in the 3rd grade at a local elementary school. The students had regular English classes twice a week for 14 weeks and experimental teaching was given during the English classes. The word reading test, questionnaires and survey were given to the subject before and after experimental teaching.
The researcher taught vowels, rhyme and how to decode the word by recognizing the following onset and rime patterns: -ad, -en, -ig, -ug, -ose, -ake, -ike, -ing, -ink, -ain, -oat, -ue, -y. In addition, students practiced word reading with various onset/rime-based activities: Jolly phonics songs, nursery rhyme, rhyming poem, rhyme slide, onset and rime tiles, bingo game.
The results of this experiment were as follows: First, the students scored higher in the word reading test after being taught onset/rime-based phonics. Second, some of the students showed improved confidence in word reading. Furthermore, the majority of the students showed a more positive attitude to word reading and a heightened interest in English classes.
The results of this study suggest that teaching vowels and rhyme with onset/rime patterns is very effective and help students at the beginning level to have confidence in reading. Also, many students showed high interests in game-related reading activities.
