- Abstract
- The purpose of this study is to analyze the efficiency of speaking tasks in English textbooks for first grade middle school students in helping learners to improve their English communicative competence based on the 2011 revised curriculum. Achieving communicative competence is the main goal of English education in public schools in South Korea. In this study, five textbooks for the first grade middle school students compared based on the criteria: the achievement standards of the 2011 revised curriculum, and the type of speaking tasks.
The results of this study can be summarized as follows. First, most speaking tasks are focused on a variety of communications. However, the tasks are often simple and repetitive drills. Speaking tasks should be comprised of a variety of tasks as a means to meet the standards set out in the 2011 revised curriculum. Second, most speaking tasks are limited to manipulation drills focusing on basic grammar form and vocabulary. This does not motivate learners to improve their communicative skills. Speaking tasks should include activities with various levels of difficulty.
Based on the results of this study, speaking tasks in English textbooks used by first grade middle school students should focus on the meaning and fluency of language. Additionally, speaking tasks should adhere to the 2011 revised curriculum and integrate speaking tasks with reading, listening and writing. Finally, teachers should make an effort to develop teaching materials and activities to improve learner's communicative skills.
