Abstract
This research investigates and analyzes to what extent middle school first graders can solve problems related to linear equations and functions. It also investigates the extent of students’ self-monitoring on the problems. The results of the study read as follows.
First, when solving addition (subtraction) formulas and multiplication (division) formulas, the students tend to have more difficulty solving problems consist of fractions than integers. Among the students who gave incorrect answers, about 50% of them had the average of 5∼8 on their self-monitoring scale.
Second, the students have difficulty solving a linear equation consists of variables with minus operators. In the case of division formulas, they think the notion of a reciprocal is difficult. Their extent of self-monitoring was high (6∼8) when there were variables with minus operators.
Third, the students can easily detect the changes in the two plus signs put together, but had difficulty understanding how to render expressions.
Fourth, there are many students who can solve basic function problems of the middle school first grade level but they could not represent graphs of function. Also, there were many students on the scale from 6 to 8 in the self-monitoring survey when it comes to finding interaction formulas and drawing graphs of function.
Fifth, students having trouble with monitoring their process of solving problems should be given chances to look back on the result of problem solving assessments on their own.
