An Analysis of the English Relative Pronouns in Middle School English Textbooks

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to analyze the frequency of relative pronouns used in the middle school English 3rd grade textbooks, so that we can find out whether the textbooks reflect the adequate quantity of relative pronouns and suggest an effective way to organize the contents of the English textbooks.
This study examined the reading parts of the four selected textbooks and two English novels for comparison. The reading materials were analyzed on the basis of three criteria, which were (1) the types of relative pronouns, (2) the Cases of relative pronouns, and (3) the animacy of the antecedents.
The findings of this study can be summarized as follows: first, the total four English textbooks include much more relative clauses than the novels. The average of the textbooks is 5.5%, which is higher than 2.3% of the novels. Second, unlike novels, the analysis of the textbooks shows that not all types of relative pronouns are equally dealt with. Each textbook inclines toward some specific types of relative pronouns and rarely include the object relative pronoun, whom. Third, for the cases of relative pronouns, most of the textbooks and novels have a higher percentage of subject relative pronouns than the object relative pronouns. But only one textbook(D) has more object relative pronouns, which can make students difficult in understanding reading passages in the textbooks. Fourth, according to the animacy of antecedents in the object relative pronouns, the greater part of the object relative pronouns come with the animate antecedents, which has same results as the textbooks and novels.
In conclusion, this study claims that the textbooks should deal with the various types of relative pronouns in the different contexts, such that the learners can improve their overall English proficiency and use the relative pronouns precisely.
