- Alternative Title
- Moderating effect of cultural orientation on the relationship between parenting attitude and academic achievement of middle school student
- Abstract
- Today, students spend most of their time and grow up with many emotional experiences at home. Especially, the relationship between parents and children affects students in different perspectives. That is, it is true that depending on the parenting attitude, students’ characteristics, academic achievement, and basic attitudes are heavily affected.
In particular, because students’ intellectual standard, schools, and careers are determined depending on their academic achievement, it has become the primary interests in school education.
Furthermore, taking into the consideration that the result of advance research on the relationship between parenting attitude and academic achievement is inconsistent, cultural disposition of individualism-
collectivism are set as a research variable again.
Therefore, this research looks into how the academic achievement of students vary depending on the parenting attitude perceived by children of middle school students and whether the individualism-collectivism tendency of students moderate the relationship between parenting attitude and their academic achievement or not.
For this research, a self report type survey was conducted to 535 Grade 7, 8, and 9 male and female students living in Busan. The collected data was analyzed by the following method;
First, to identify general characteristics and relationship of variables, average and standard deviation were analyzed using SPSS 19.0.
Second, correlation analysis was carried out to check the relationship between parenting attitude, cultural disposition, and academic achievement.
Third, to examine moderating effect of cultural disposition in terms of influence of parenting attitudes on academic achievement, rearing attitude of father and mother are divided. Moreover, to find out about moderating effect of the two cultural dispositions, collectivism and individualism respectively, multiple regression analysis was done.
The summary of this research as follows;
First of all, parental rearing attitudes of love-hostility and autonomy-control as well as maternal rearing attitudes of autonomy-control were related with children’s academic achievement. However, maternal rearing attitudes of love-hostility had no relationship with their academic achievement.
Secondly, parental rearing attitude had a moderating effect on academic achievement depending on the cultural disposition of individualism and collectivism. However, maternal rearing attitude had no moderating effect on the result of academic achievement depending on the cultural disposition.
In other words, in the relationship between paternal rearing attitude and academic achievement, it implies that there is a moderating effect of cultural disposition.
This means under the premise that other than maternal, paternal’s rearing attitude affects students, if students are raised based on their dispositions, individualism or collectivism, it could be a big help to the improvement of their academic achievement.
